Universal Life Church Monastery > General > General Questions & Answers For ULC Ministers & Members
Rev. Sam
I just recently was ordained with the ULCM and I am planning on taking my papers to the court house on Monday here in Virginia. I just read in this forum that Virginia will not accept ULCM ordained ministers to officiate weddings . Is this still the case? Is there anyone here that is in VA that may or may not have encountered problems in VA?

I am not familiar with the laws of VA, but I would strongly suggest you follow through with your plans to go to the courthouse and get the information firsthand from the court clerk. That way you will have gotten it straight from the horse's mouth and not through a third-party opinion. Good luck and please let us know what you discover..... God's Peace....To`na Wanagi

Any feedback on Virginia? I started the process to assist a friend in their future vows and ceremony. I hope that Va. will recognize this following.

I know this may be a little late, but maybe it can help you or anyone else who encounters this issue.

http://www.vaag.com/OPINIONS/2001opns/01-057.pdf

abovie is the official Opinion of the Va Attouney General on the issue. Basically what it says is that the decision is made at the descression of the clerck of the circuit court on if they can officiate the ceremony.

I'd love to hear how this turns out for you, and, being in Va myself, whether of not this issue has come up for anyone else in our state.

all states have to follow the nations highest laws which is the constitution. You as a validly ordained minister which the neither the state nor the federal government legally has no right to determine what makes a valid minister.

Pretty much it's a matter of the local interpretation... And here lies the problem.

The US courts seem to have ruled that the ULC and ULCM as well as other online churches are in fact churches and have the authority to ordain who ever they will; as any church so has the right to do. Some states have chosen to ignore this and in some cases it is merely one or two counties with in a state or in frequent cases it is only the bias of one county clerk that is the deciding factor in excluding ULC, ULCM, UM, or any other online church credentials.

Here is a very useful link What to do if the clerk refuses your credentials. It has instructions for who to contact if you can not get the cooperation you are constitutionally entitled to receive.

no state legislature has the Authority to override the constitution therefore they in fact have no rights to religion. No matter what they say.
